The word ‘ideal’ means optimal, most favourable or perfect. So, this topic is looking at the most favourable or ideal place for writing. Let’s take a look at some of the places where writers could get their juices flowing and which may be optimal.
Before we continue, it is important to point out that just as genres and writing styles are different, so are writers. Writing involves several steps such as brainstorming, researching, actual writing, editing, proofreading and publishing or posting online.
Depending on the writer, the subject matter, the writer’s familiarity with the subject matter and the platform for publication, the writer may not need to go through every one of the steps mentioned. This, therefore, influences the writer’s ideal location for writing, as well as what attributes the location should have.
A Library
Writing in a library is ideal for some writers. It could be in their personal libraries or in a public library. For such writers, there are several reasons why the library is the ideal place for writing. They could be writing historical pieces that require them to do a lot of research. It could also be that they like the peace and quiet provided by the library, as well as the discipline that being in a library fosters.
Any Quiet Place
For some writers, any quiet place is the ideal place for writing. It could be in their bedroom, a chapel (while people are at work), their garage, the living room etc. The one prerequisite for such writers is serenity.
Once they have that, such a place is their ideal place for writing. For these writers, it does not matter if there are other people around them or not. What matters is how quiet the environment is.
Alone (in Solitude)
There are some writers who always write in solitude. It does not matter what their subject matter is. They just have to be alone, in order to write anything. Usually, many of such writers are natural loners. So, writing in solitude is just as good as any of their other regular activities done in solitude.
Such writers do not alternate or switch up their ideal place for writing. For them, being alone is the ideal and the only situation in which they can write.
A Noisy Place
You must have come across people who play music when writing. You might have also seen people who write in a noisy place. These categories of writers get their juices flowing when they are in noisy environments or places with background sounds. The sounds boost and sustain the inspiration of such writers. A quiet place may not fuel their creativity. Noise equals heightened inspiration for these writers. In this context, a noisy place equals an ideal place for writing.
Anywhere Inspiration Strikes
Some writers are not particular about where they write. Whenever and wherever inspiration strikes, there they write. This is in contrast to some writers who would jot down an idea, and build on it when they get to their ideal place for writing.
For writers who write wherever inspiration strikes, the noise does not matter, and neither does the silence (depending on the ambience). As long as the juices are flowing, the environment does not matter.
Writers have their quirks and preferences. One writer’s personality and experiences may be different from the next writer’s. All these determine what a writer would consider as his or her ideal place for writing.
Some writers stick to only one or two of the environments mentioned but some others can write in any of such places. This goes to show that the word ‘ideal’ is not just subjective, it is also contingent on events.
The good news is that it does not matter where you get your creative juices flowing or what boosts your creativity. All that the readers want is to read what you have written. So, go to your favourite writing place and create something for your readers.
